Shapes
Identifying and discussing shapes is an ongoing activity in our classroom. This project was initiated when shapes was the weekly theme. Each child was given a selection of shapes to choose from. We used recycled pizza boxes and cut a shape out for each child (the cardboard was much too thick for children to cut safely). Again the children were given a variety of materials to choose from as they created their unique design. I used a glue gun to add a magnet to the back so that the project could be displayed on the child’s refrigerator at home.
Some of the skills strengthened in this project are, hand-eye coordination, creative expression, math terms, use of small muscles of the hands for painting, sorting materials, cutting, gluing, social interaction, listening skills, and following directions.
