The Turtle
A staff member has a pet box turtle named “Mr Meemy” who comes and visits the children so that they can see what a real turtle looks like. Afterwards, the children use their sense of recall to remember the parts and details of Mr. Meemy.
When constructing the turtle, children count the number of legs and choose a head and tail to which they add the details (as the pictures in the gallery show). Teachers initiate several math terms such as how many, more, less, long, and short. Language, cognitive, physical (small muscles of the hands) and social development is enhanced as the children interact with each other, use positional words such as up, down, next to ,in the middle, under (math, and language development),to place the appropriate parts on their turtle. Listening skills (following oral direction that involve several steps) and the good feeling of being able to complete a task, enhances each child’s self esteem.
